    Deep sea aquaculture in 1995 was identified as a fishery growth mode with great potential by the technology evaluation office of the U.S. Federal government. The national oceanic and atmospheric administration (NOAA) of the U.S. defined deep sea aquaculture as: biological breeding under controlled conditions in 3 nm to 200 nm offshore, and its facilities are floating, submerged, or loaded on fixed structure facilities.

    After dozens of years of technology accumulation and application practice, deep sea aquaculture development mature. Wang lumin, deputy director of the East China Sea Fishery Research Institute of the Chinese academy of fishery sciences, believes that the characteristics of deep sea Marine aquaculture in line with China's national conditions are: more than 3km away from the mainland coastline, in the open sea;The water depth is more than 20 meters, with the characteristics of oceanic wave and current;Large-scale facilities, including but not limited to cage, fence, platform, construction ship, etc.

    At present, the development of deep sea aquaculture in China has several opportunities. First, the systematic cage farming industry has laid a foundation for the development of deep sea aquaculture. Second, National aquaculture industry development policy will promote the aquaculture in deep sea. Third, vessel, sea work, new materials, intelligence technology will support large-scale facilities in deep sea.
